![]() From now on, I will lament their passing in private because my despair is for those who live in this present world. However, I am afraid it will be the last time that I will bear witness to those soldiers, airmen and sailors who are no more, at my local cenotaph. But most importantly, I wear the poppy to commemorate those of my childhood friends and comrades who did not survive the second world war and those who came home physically and emotionally wounded from horrific battles that no poet or journalist could describe. I wear the poppy because I can recall when Britain was actually threatened with a real invasion and how its citizens stood at the ready to defend her shores. I wear it because I am from that last generation who remember a war that encompassed the entire world. Still, this year I shall wear the poppy as I have done for many years. The American civil war's General Sherman once said that " war is hell", but unfortunately today's politicians in Britain use past wars to bolster our flagging belief in national austerity or to compel us to surrender our rights as citizens, in the name of the public good. ![]() The most fortunate in our society have turned the solemnity of remembrance for fallen soldiers in ancient wars into a justification for our most recent armed conflicts. By the end of the day, hundreds of RSL poppies had been pushed into the cracks between the panels bearing the names of the fallen.O ver the last 10 years the sepia tone of November has become blood-soaked with paper poppies festooning the lapels of our politicians, newsreaders and business leaders. As people waited to lay a single flower by his tomb in the Hall of Memory, they had to queue along the cloisters, beside the Roll of Honour. This practice began at the interment of the Unknown Australian Soldier on 11 November 1993. Poppies adorn the panels of the Memorial's Roll of Honour, placed beside names as a small personal tribute to the memory of a particular person, or to any of the thousands of individuals commemorated there. A senior Australian officer also a laid a wreath of poppies picked from the slopes of Mt Scopus. At the Dawn Service in 1940 each soldier dropped a poppy as he filed past the Stone of Remembrance. An early instance took place in Palestine, where poppies grow abundantly in the spring. The poppy has also become very popular in wreaths used on Anzac Day. Today the RSL continues to sell poppies for Remembrance Day to raise funds for its welfare work. Each poppy was sold for a shilling: five pence was donated to a charity for French children, six pence went to the League's own welfare work, and one penny went to the League's national coffers. For this drive, the league imported one million silk poppies, made in French orphanages. The Australian Returned Soldiers and Sailors Imperial League (the forerunner to the RSL) first sold poppies for Armistice Day in 1921. The poppy soon became widely accepted throughout the allied nations as the flower of remembrance to be worn on Armistice Day. Anna Guérin, the French YMCA secretary, took the idea further by selling poppies to raise money for widows, orphans, and needy veterans and their families. At a meeting of YMCA secretaries from other countries, held in November 1918, she talked about the poem and her poppies. She was so moved by it that she wrote a poem in reply and decided to wear a red poppy always as a way of keeping faith, as McCrae had urged in his poem. ![]() ![]() Moina Michael, who worked for the American YMCA, read McCrae's poem just before the Armistice. In English literature of the nineteenth century, poppies had symbolised sleep or a state of oblivion in the literature of the First World War a new, more powerful symbolism was attached to the poppy – the sacrifice of shed blood. The sight of poppies on the battlefield at Ypres in 1915 moved Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae to write the poem In Flanders fields (see The recitation). In soldiers' folklore, the vivid red of the poppy came from the blood of their comrades soaking the ground. During the First World War, red poppies were among the first plants to spring up in the devastated battlefields of northern France and Belgium. The Flanders poppy has long been a part of Remembrance Day, the ritual that marks the Armistice of 11 November 1918, and is also increasingly being used as part of Anzac Day observances.

Power for the flapping action was to be provided by the pilot, who would need to be highly athletic, to say the least. These wings were equipped with dozens of flexible fabric valves which were supposed to open on the upstroke and close on the downstroke. The Cyclogyro patent was granted in the summer of 1927, but by the end of that year Caldwell, now living in Denver, filed another patent on an even more impractical human-powered, flapping-wing aircraft, or "ornithopter." This contraption looked like a rowboat with birdlike wings. ![]() The plane's "wings" were actually small airfoil blades mounted in Ferris wheel-like rotating frames protruding from either side of a conventional aircraft fuselage. In February 1923, while living in Santa Monica, California, he filed an application for a patent covering a rather bizarre aircraft - a so-called "Cyclogyro"- which was designed to take off vertically and transition to forward flight. In the 1920s, according to statements he made later in life, Caldwell became interested in aviation and began to study the fundamentals of aerodynamics, gleaning scraps of knowledge from textbooks and encyclopedias. He attended Oregon State College, Corvallis, from 1912 to 1913, majoring in mechanical engineering. According to his college records, Caldwell was born in the small town of Hensall, Ontario, Canada in 1883. Jonathan Edward Caldwell was something of a mystery even to his close relatives, and his strange career can only be reconstructed in spotty form through newspaper clippings, patent documents and newsreel scripts. landed on its inventor, but didn't kill him. WinRAR uses an AES-128-bit encryption, but 7-Zip uses the more secure AES-256. How secure the password protection on a ZIP or RAR file is depends partly on the program used to protect it. ![]() Meanwhile, ZIP's default support in operating systems does not come with password protection settings in recent years programs like 7-Zip or WinZip are required. RAR files require WinRAR for compression in the first place, and WinRAR has password encryption settings you can use. Standard ZIP compressed this by 62%, while RAR achieved 71% compression and 7-Zip reached 76% compression.Ī program is required to secure ZIP and RAR files with a password. Before compression, Google Earth was 23.5 MB in size. Pavlov proved this by compressing an installation of Google Earth. Though a lot does come down to the file types being compressed, RAR and 7-Zip's ZIP archives compress data as much as 30 to 40% better than standard ZIP. Igor Pavlov, the Russian developer of 7-Zip, has stated that the standard ZIP format is inferior to RAR and ZIP files created in 7-Zip. In deciding which compression method to use, you should figure out which features you need most: speed, efficiency, accessibility, security, etc. Likewise, RAR is better at compression than ZIP, but it, too, requires other software prior to use, even for simple data extraction/decompression. However, the file extensions required for newer compression methods, which are not supported in any operating system by default, mean you may sacrifice accessibility when using them to share files. These algorithms are much better at compressing files than the default ZIP method, which is fast but uses older and less efficient DEFLATE compression. For example, the program 7-Zip can use LZMA and LZMA2 compression algorithms, which result in a ".7z" file extension. Utilizing different and more efficient algorithms sometimes calls for a change in file extension. ![]() Text files can be compressed considerably, for example, but multimedia files, like MP3s or AVIs, may already be in a compressed state, meaning further compression may decrease folder or file size only slightly. Partially-free decompression commercial compression. ZIP file format permits a number of compression algorithms. ZIP file may contain one or more files or folders that may have been compressed.
